Your college years are approaching and you still don’t know what to study? Don’t worry, there are many undergraduates who are in the same situation as you.

The choice of a university degree is an important decision that can greatly influence your future and it is normal that you have doubts or fear of making a mistake.

How to choose a career path?

The first step in your career path begins in college.

So, before deciding what you want to study, it is advisable to take into account a series of individual factors that will undoubtedly help you find answers more easily, but without losing sight of the lifestyle or goals you would like to achieve in the future.

In other words, to know which university career you should study, you will first have to think about the profession you would like to develop tomorrow.

For example, an exercise that works very well is to imagine, in great detail, what your life would be like after studying in college: what working hours you would have, what kind of people you would interact with, what a routine day at work would be like….

If this seems like an attractive lifestyle and you’re eager to experience it first-hand, you may have finally figured out the riddle of what career you should study in college.

If not, we invite you to take a look at the following tips.

5 tips to guide yourself for your career path

Finding the answer to what to study in college can be difficult in some cases, especially if you are not yet clear about what your career path will be. However, if you take into account the tips below, you will be able to make better decisions.

Shall we start?

1 – Identify your interests:

Make a list of your favorite activities and hobbies, as well as the subjects you enjoy most in school. This can be a good starting point to discover what options you should consider for college.

For example, if you enjoy traveling and learning about the social and political realities of other cultures, you might choose a career in international studies.

2 – Assess your skills:

Beyond what you like to do, you also need to consider what your strengths and weaknesses are, as this type of information can help you rule out some careers and consider new options.

For example, if you are an organized and detail-oriented person, you might consider careers related to accounting or Business Administration and Management.  Whereas, if you have a creative mind and are good at connecting with others, you may want to contemplate studying a Marketing and Communications degree.

3 – Consider your long-term goals:

What goals would you like to achieve both professionally and personally? What kind of life would you like to lead? The answers to these questions will lead you to the careers you should study to achieve them.

In other words, no matter how much you like or are good at sports, it wouldn’t make sense to study Athletic Training in college unless you want to become a physical trainer, coach or physical education teacher.

4 – Do some research:

Analyze the different careers, read program descriptions in detail and attend information sessions offered by the university centers to learn the information firsthand.

You can also talk to professionals in your industry or attend job fairs before deciding what to study in college. This will give you a clearer idea of what is involved and make it easier for you to make a decision.

Keeping in mind the careers with the most job opportunities before deciding what to study in college will give you a realistic view of the chances of finding employment after college.

If you are still unsure about what to study in college after applying these tips, you may want to consider taking a career counseling test.

This type of test, while not giving you the absolute truth, will help you better identify your interests and aptitudes and provide you with suggestions on what to study in college that you may not have had in mind.
