5 extracurricular activities in college that will boost your professional profile

Participating in extracurricular activities while studying a university degree is, without a doubt, one of the best decisions you can make to boost your professional career.

In fact, besides being a way to have fun and make friends, these types of activities can become a powerful tool to develop new skills and start writing your professional resume.

That’s why at CIS University we offer a wide range of extracurricular activities so that our students can continue their growth outside the classroom as well.

Would you like to know how extracurricular activities influence job placement?

Why are extracurricular activities important?

Extracurricular activities are an excellent way to add a plus to your resume to make you stand out from the rest of the applicants for a job offer.

Many employers are looking for active candidates who are able to get involved in different projects, beyond strictly meeting ‘script requirements’, and the fact that you have participated in extracurricular activities shows that you are a committed student, able to manage your time and work as part of a team.

In addition, depending on the type of initiatives you get involved in, you can develop certain skills that are highly valued in the professional environment, such as leadership, problem solving and effective communication.

Not to mention that, thanks to extracurricular activities, companies can get a pretty good idea of your personal values and interests.

Benefits of extracurricular activities

Beyond being a great way to highlight your resume in the future, participating in extracurricular activities during college has multiple benefits for learning.

Extracurricular activities not only help students develop essential time management skills, but they also foster a positive attitude toward studying.

That is, by allowing students to develop their passions and interests, extracurricular activities create a sense of relaxation and enjoyment that translates into increased motivation toward learning in college.

Furthermore, extracurricular activities for college students often involve setting and achieving goals. Whether through sports, volunteering or other activities, students learn to work toward specific goals and develop a mindset and discipline that can be invaluable in their college studies.

Moreover, many extracurricular activities require teamwork, which allows students to improve their social skills and collaborate effectively with others, crucial for group work and projects in college.

And finally, participation in extracurricular activities can spark students’ curiosity and lead them to investigate and expand their knowledge beyond the classroom, thus enriching their overall college learning experience.

List of extracurricular activities in college

At CIS University we understand the education of our students from a global and holistic point of view. This is why we offer a wide range of extracurricular activities that complement the knowledge they acquire at the academic level.

1 – Study Abroad Programs

Although when we talk about extracurricular activities we don’t always think of study abroad programs, studying a career in another country can also fall into this category.

For during their stay in another country, students acquire the skills necessary to work abroad while enhancing their personal development.

2 – Sports activities

One of the extracurricular activities par excellence is sports. Self-improvement, perseverance and teamwork are values inherent to the practice of sports.

At CIS University we have different programs and scholarships to accompany promising young people and high-performance athletes during their stay in college.

3 – University clubs

Another classic extracurricular activity is the university clubs. A meeting place where students, in addition to expanding and putting into practice the knowledge they have learned in class, will have the opportunity to self-manage and develop all kinds of skills that will be very useful in their professional future.

At CIS University, for example, we have a debate club, a creative society, a chess club, a reading club and an entrepreneurs club.

4 – Volunteering

Volunteering is a great way to develop your interpersonal skills while doing something for others.

At CIS University we have our own NGO (Cruzada por los niños) and two foundations (International Studies Foundation and Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Spain) in which all students can participate as volunteers to help promote the learning of English among underprivileged children.

These experiences, in addition to fostering the personal growth of our students, are a great opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others through the development of certain interpersonal communication skills.

5 – Mentoring and accompanying activities

Another way to participate in extracurricular activities is through mentoring programs or accompaniment activities that we organize for our foreign students, as in the case of our Ambassadors Circle.

Thanks to this type of activities, students develop skills such as empathy and effective communication. Skills that are very necessary to foster a good working environment.

As you can see, participating in extracurricular activities while you are in college is more important than it seems.
