Zachary Zemmels: from the USA to Madrid thanks to soccer

By Ariana Esteve

Zachary Zemmels is a 20-year-old student from the United States who is part of the CIS University Elite Soccer Program. He is currently a junior at CIS University majoring in Business Management. This is his third year living in Madrid and he is loving it so far. Let’s find out about his experience at the Elite Soccer Program and the differences that he finds between Spanish and American soccer.

Can you let us know where you come from and what you are doing at CIS University?

I am from New Orleans, Louisiana, and this is my third year at CIS University in Madrid and in the Elite Soccer Program. I already played semiprofessional soccer in the USA and now I am continuing my career here in Spain. I am loving the change.

In which team are you currently playing here in Madrid?

I am playing for Valdebebas F.C.

Do you like your lifestyle in Spain?

Definitely.

Do you plan to go back and try soccer in the USA?

No, I want to stay here in Spain and try everything here. I also think there are more opportunities in Spain.

Do you think soccer is more competitive in Spain than in the USA?

I have absolutely no doubt about that. Yes, here it is more competitive.

Can you talk about the differences you noticed between soccer in Spain and in the USA?

In Spain it is more technical, tactical and less physical.

Did you come with any advantages?

I have a better athletic background and that helps a lot, but now I have to improve my techniques and personal skills development.

Do you mean, get better at the Tiki-Taka?

Yes.

Which position do you play?

Defensive mid, but I can also play center back.

Can you talk about your personal statistics: goals and assistance?

I scored one goal and gave some assistance during the season.

Are you a starter in the games?

Unfortunately, this season I have been starting on the bench, as I had an injury. Last season, I was a starter; so, hopefully, I will become a starter again soon. This season, we have new players; so, the competitiveness is increasing. Let’s see what happens.

How are your studies at CIS going?

I’m giving my best to get the best grades possible.

How is your life in Madrid?

Madrid is an incredible city that I like and enjoy very much. I would love to stay here for many more years.
