Fall 2024 broke the record for how many students were getting involved in the Language Exchange Program with 123 initial signups. The students were from many different nationalities and taught each other Spanish, English, French, Arabic, German, Chinese, Hebrew, Italian, and Swedish.
According to professor Alex Feldman, one of the professors in charge of this year’s language exchange program, the number of students for Fall 24 has more than doubled in size from last semester. “Numerically, it’s the most successful semester for the Language Exchange Program,” according to Feldman.
The Language Exchange Program is a great way for students to meet new people and learn a new language. CIS University offers it to create stronger bonds between local and international students while offering a cross-cultural experience. The students who sign up for this program pick a language they want to learn, or perfect. Then, the professors in charge, professors Alex Feldman and Tracy Wood, pair the students according to the language they want to learn.
Malena Marks, one of the students involved in the language exchange program, explained that the reason for her joining this program is because she wants to perfect her Spanish. Malena has lived in the United States for her entire life and wants to improve her Spanish since she now lives in Madrid. “The language exchange program is a great way to learn the language, but also to meet new people and make new friends,” said Malena.
The Language Exchange Program is also favorable for students in many other ways because it benefits their academic excellence and performance. If the students in this program meet for five hours, they will earn a 5% final-grade increase for their language and writing courses. If they log a total of 10 hours, they can get up to a 10% increase on their language courses.
In short, the CIS University Language Exchange Program can be a great way for students to not only learn a language and make new friends, but also improve their academic GPA and overall experience at the university.
