For many university students, studying abroad is a dream come true. Many of the university students in Spain have the desire to study abroad and finish their degrees in other countries. This decision can result in a unique opportunity to step outside their comfort zone, broaden their horizons, and gain a much bigger global perspective. This experience has the power to change lives in a profound and lasting way for those who learn how to take advantage of it.
There are many reasons why young people want to have the opportunity to go abroad. For example, studying abroad provides a chance to travel, discover new places, and engage in exciting adventures, fostering a sense of independence and curiosity. CIS University students are some of the lucky few who have the option to experience the adventure of studying abroad, not only for three months or a year, as might be the case at other universities. At CIS University, students can complete the last two years of their degree abroad, either at our main campus, Endicott College in Boston, or at any other university worldwide.
In fact, many of our students start their degree in Spain and conclude it in the United States. At CIS University, students can pursue the 2+2 program, through which they commence their studies at our Madrid campus for the first two years and then transfer to another American university for their remaining two years.
Arianna Gil, a CIS University student, is currently finishing her degree studies abroad at Endicott College as a result of the “2+2” option. She defines her experience as “the most beneficial decision” that she has ever made in her lifetime. In Endicott, she has formed close friendships with her classmates, whom she refers to as “family.” Despite her relatively short time at the university, they have become essential to her. “Even though I haven’t been here for a long time, they have become like a big family to me,” she stated.
Arianna is enjoying the advantages of studying abroad: the opportunity to become familiar with a new way of life, a cultural environment and geographical setting, and a warm social circle that she would not have had the chance to meet had she decided to stay in Spain.
Arianna highlights that she is acquiring greater independence skills with the passage of time. Initially, she admits experiencing difficulties and feelings of homesickness. However, she recognizes that big decisions come with significant responsibilities, including taking care of oneself. Despite the massive change of this transition, the supportive environment at Endicott has greatly facilitated her adaptation and she is now thriving in this new setting.
In addition to Endicott College, our students have the opportunity to study abroad at any country or university that they choose. Alternatively, they can also transfer and finish their studies at a different institution.
The Dean of Student Affairs, Mary McCarthy, explained that the most popular destinations among students are located in the United States, with the majority choosing to study on the East Coast, particularly in the Boston area. Southern California is also a popular choice among students on the West Coast.
Additionally, Europe is a popular destination for students of European origin, who can experience independence while still enjoying the option of returning home when necessary, as it is only a few hours’ flight away. European students who select other European countries as their destination tend to opt for Paris, Rome, or London.
Studying abroad provides students with the chance to gain a global perspective and self-awareness, while simultaneously aiding in their academic success and enhancing their career prospects.
Moreover, the university offers the option of pursuing a fifth-year Master’s Degree exclusively at Endicott College, with the first four years completed at CIS University and the last year at the aforementioned institution. This enables students who wish to remain at their current campus throughout their undergraduate studies to still have the opportunity to experience university life abroad.
To be able to study abroad or to transfer to other higher education institutions, students must have grades that meet the requirements of the university of their choice. The Dean of Student Affairs recommends applying to three or four universities to increase the chances of being accepted. Students should research the universities that they would like to go to to be able to pick the ones that suit them the best. Grades are not the only important factor. While they are a significant part, the admission process also includes a personal essay. Many universities pay attention to it, as it reflects the student’s personality and showcases what they can contribute to the university. Everything that you add is important; every small contribution counts, and any extracurricular activities, community service, or work experience can help you to be among the chosen ones.
Studying abroad provides students with an irreplaceable opportunity to expand their academic, personal, and cultural horizons. The experience can be life-changing for those who fully engage in it, offering the chance to explore new countries, get to know diverse cultures, and gain a deeper sense of independence.
