Course No:<\/b> ESL 025<\/span> This course introduces students to upper-intermediate business English. It builds on the skills introduced in Business English II and prepares the students for English Communication. Students continue to study business topics and acquire business vocabulary. They write business letters, reports, press releases, agendas, minutes and summarize articles from business magazines and newspapers.<\/span><\/p> Learning Outcomes At the end of the course, students will be able to:<\/span><\/p> 1.<\/strong> Have a better understanding of written Business English.<\/span><\/p> 2.<\/strong> Speak more fluently on Business related topics.<\/span><\/p> 3.<\/strong> Write more accurately using Business contexts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p> 4.<\/strong> Use the language and communication skills which they have acquired for further discussion through active group work<\/span>.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n <\/div> Course No:<\/b> ESL 034<\/span> This course is intended for students whose skills are between upper intermediate and advanced level. It reflects the fast changing world of business with materials from authentic sources. Students study business topics and acquire proficiency in written and oral communication. They study case studies, practice group work situations, and give presentations, which all helps to improve their business communication. Credits for this course do not count towards a degree.<\/span><\/p> At the end of the course, students will be able to:<\/span><\/p> 1.<\/strong> Listen actively to lectures and presentations.<\/span><\/p> 2.<\/strong> Participate with more confidence in seminars and group discussions.<\/span><\/p> 3.<\/strong> Deliver short presentations.<\/span><\/p> 4.<\/strong> Understand the main idea and identify the writer’s stance in academic texts.<\/span><\/p> 5.<\/strong> Refer and respond to points of view in both discussion and writing.<\/span><\/p> 6.<\/strong> Use a wider range of academic and technical language in their writing and speech.<\/span><\/p> 7.<\/strong> Develop their speaking and active listening skills by participating in discussions and debates and any other speaking\/listening exercises.<\/span><\/p> 8.<\/strong> Develop their listening skills by practicing listening in detail and listening for gist.<\/span><\/p> 9.<\/strong> Develop their knowledge of writing short essays, reports and descriptions, in order to defend and convey ideas, arguments and opinions.<\/span><\/p> 10.<\/strong> Learn useful and relevant language that will strengthen their use of the English language in both their academic and personal environments.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n <\/div> Course No:<\/b> ENG 100<\/span> This advanced writing course prepares ESL students for Critical Reading and Writing by introducing them to the fundamentals of academic writing. The course introduces students to paragraph organization and structure through writing assignments. In addition, students are introduced to the basic elements of ESSAY writing and to APA referencing.<\/span><\/p> Learning Outcomes At the end of the course, students will be able to:<\/span><\/p> 1.<\/strong> Plan and organize the structure of an essay before beginning to write.<\/span><\/p> 2.<\/strong> Construct and develop the introduction, body and closing paragraphs of a university paper.<\/span><\/p> 3.<\/strong> Use an academic voice in their writing to conform to acceptable academic standards.<\/span><\/p> 4.<\/strong> Compose papers in a variety of genres including literary, descriptive, creative and discursive.<\/span><\/p> 5.<\/strong> Compose an essay in response to a critical thinking task.<\/span><\/p> 6.<\/strong> Compose abstracts for their own and other authors\u2019 essays.<\/span><\/p> 7.<\/strong> Summarize, analyze and respond to texts.<\/span><\/p> 8.<\/strong> Control writing accuracy by minimizing grammar, punctuation and spelling errors.<\/span><\/p> 9.<\/strong> Identify an author\u2019s position and main ideas.<\/span><\/p> 10.<\/strong> Provide in-text citations for quotations\/sources and list them appropriately in the \u201cReferences\u201d section at the end of their essays using the APA style.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n <\/div> Course No:<\/b> ENG 102<\/span> This course provides an introduction to the fundamentals of literary study. The course focuses on interpretation and criticism of fiction, poetry, and drama. Critical methodologies for literary analysis, literary terminology, and appropriate research methods are also examined. Satisfies the Literary Perspectives General Education and Writing Designated Core Requirements.<\/span><\/p> At the end of the course, students will be able to:<\/span><\/p> 1.<\/strong> Understand and apply the literary elements of the genres: poetry, fiction, and drama.<\/span><\/p> 2.<\/strong> Read critically with attention to theme, style and structure.<\/span><\/p> 3.<\/strong> Support ideas by referring to and quoting\u00a0 from the text.<\/span><\/p> 4.<\/strong> Analyze the text within the context of a literary tradition or convention.<\/span><\/p> 5.<\/strong> Explore themes and discuss underlying meanings and universal truths.<\/span><\/p> 6.<\/strong> Understand how cultural, social and historical context influences\u00a0 both writers and readers.<\/span><\/p> 7.<\/strong> Respond to texts by making connections with personal experience.<\/span><\/p> 8.<\/strong> Express ideas about literature confidently in writing.<\/span><\/p> 9.<\/strong> Present ideas about literature confidently in presentations and discussions.<\/span><\/p> 10.<\/strong> Document sources correctly using the CIS University\u2013Endicott College Reference Guide.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n <\/div> Course No:<\/b> ENG 103<\/span> Development of effective speaking and speech writing skills.
