It is the ability to transform an idea into an emotion, inspire others, and create connections that last far beyond the moment itself. With that spirit in mind, CIS University celebrated the third edition of its <\/span><b>Speech Contest<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an initiative that has become one of the university&#8217;s flagship activities in promoting <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Power Skills,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the essential competencies students need to succeed in international academic and professional environments.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students, faculty, and guests gathered for an event in which seven contestants took on the challenge of delivering a three-minute speech entirely in English, without relying on written notes, before a panel of judges.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ceremony was hosted by <\/span><b>Zach Zemmels<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a CIS University alumnus, former member of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cis-spain.com\/en\/academics\/student-support\/cis-clubs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CIS University Debate Club<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the university&#8217;s current Sports Coordinator. During his opening remarks, he highlighted how strong speaking skills can open professional doors, strengthen personal relationships, and make a real difference in leadership.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reflecting the international character of CIS University, each speech offered a unique perspective. Contestants shared personal stories about adapting to new countries, leaving home behind, the power of sport to bring people together, the sacrifices required to pursue a dream, and the ability to reinvent oneself when life changes unexpectedly.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most memorable moments of the competition came from student <\/span><b>Carlos Garmendia, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">better known as<\/span><b> DJ Charly,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who explained how professional DJs create and perform their mixes before bringing the series of speeches to a close by playing one of his own remixes, demonstrating that communication can also be expressed through music.<\/span><\/p><p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-41600\" title=\"CIS University Celebrates the Third Edition of Its Annual Speech Contest 2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cis-spain.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/07\/CIS-University-Celebrates-the-Third-Edition-of-Its-Annual-Speech-Contest-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" \/><\/p><h2>An Increasingly High Standard<\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The panel of judges, made up of <\/span><b>Lauren Giera, Alex Feldman, PhD, Alexandra Ruiz-G\u00f3mez, PhD, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Tracy Wood, PhD,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> evaluated each contestant on speech structure, public speaking skills, body language, authenticity, and their ability to engage the audience.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a closely contested deliberation, the awards were presented to:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Rodrigo Marques (USA &#8211; Portugal)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Football: Breaking Lines and Breaking Barriers<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>John Choueiri (Lebanon &#8211; Ghana)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cost of a Dream.<\/span><\/i><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Jacobo Mijangos (Spain)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Living out of a Suitcase<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The event was also attended by <\/span><b>Sara Quay, PhD,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Provost of Endicott College, and <\/span><b>Warren Jaferian<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Dean of International Education, together with faculty members and students who supported the contestants throughout the competition.<\/span><\/p><h2>A Tradition That Continues to Grow<\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With its third edition, the Speech Contest continues to establish itself as one of CIS University&#8217;s signature academic initiatives.
