{"id":39791,"date":"2025-10-20T11:13:41","date_gmt":"2025-10-20T09:13:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cis-spain.com\/en\/?p=39791"},"modified":"2025-10-20T11:14:50","modified_gmt":"2025-10-20T09:14:50","slug":"cis-university-book-club-opens-the-semester-with-a-visit-to-several-literary-exhibitions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cis-spain.com\/en\/blog\/cis-university-book-club-opens-the-semester-with-a-visit-to-several-literary-exhibitions\/","title":{"rendered":"CIS University Book Club Opens the Semester with a Visit to Several Literary Exhibitions"},"content":{"rendered":"\t\t<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"39791\" class=\"elementor elementor-39791\" data-elementor-post-type=\"post\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section data-particle_enable=\"false\" data-particle-mobile-disabled=\"false\" class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-47a667f elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"47a667f\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-310cc831\" data-id=\"310cc831\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6f6ec319 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6f6ec319\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During their first activity of the semester, members of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cis-spain.com\/en\/academics\/student-support\/cis-clubs\/\"><b>CIS University Book Club<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> visited the <\/span><b>Espacio Cultural Serrer\u00eda Belga,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> one of the most prominent cultural centers in Madrid\u2019s Barrio de las Letras, to explore the three literary exhibitions currently on display there.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first of these, titled <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMadrid, Muse of Letters,\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> invited students to discover the prominent role that the city of Madrid has played in several key works of Spanish literature\u2014such as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Episodios Nacionales<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Benito P\u00e9rez Gald\u00f3s and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El Capit\u00e1n Alatriste<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Arturo P\u00e9rez-Reverte\u2014as well as in the lives of authors including P\u00edo Baroja, Miguel Hern\u00e1ndez and Rosal\u00eda de Castro, among others.<\/span><\/p><blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI loved seeing how different Spanish writers, even if they were not from Madrid, felt a deep connection with the city in different ways. We talked about Miguel Hern\u00e1ndez\u2019s imprisonment and about how the experiences and relationships of the authors with the city were very different,\u201d said student <\/span><b>Theo Svistunov,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who has been attending the club for two years.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second exhibition, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA Thousand and One Quixotes,\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> centered on Miguel de Cervantes\u2019 masterpiece <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don Quixote de la Mancha<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and featured more than 300 pieces of great artistic value, some of them never before exhibited. Among them were antique editions of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don Quixote<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in several languages, portraits, card games, storybooks and music albums, among others.<\/span><\/p><blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI knew <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don Quixote<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was very popular, but I hadn\u2019t realized how widespread its influence was\u2014not only in Spain but also abroad at the time. We saw antique editions in English, Spanish, French and Italian, so it was fascinating to learn about its international reach during that period,\u201d added student <\/span><b>Sebasti\u00e1n Zmuda,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who, like Theo Svistunov, is also one of the club\u2019s longest-standing members.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, the third exhibition focused on Madrid\u2019s literary caf\u00e9s of the 19-20th centuries, including the Caf\u00e9 de Pombo, La Fontana de Oro, Caf\u00e9 del Pr\u00edncipe and Caf\u00e9 de la Monta\u00f1a\u2014meeting places often frequented by writers such as Benito P\u00e9rez Gald\u00f3s, Ram\u00f3n Mar\u00eda del Valle-Incl\u00e1n, P\u00edo Baroja and Manuel Machado.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CIS University Book Club plans to continue its cultural excursions throughout the semester.
