Based on a shared love of reading, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cis-spain.com\/en\/academics\/student-support\/cis-clubs\/\"><b>CIS University Book Club<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> allows these students not only to explore new poetry, short stories and novels, but to do so alongside the diverse perspectives of their peers and club coordinator, <\/span><b>Professor Mar G\u00e1mez Garc\u00eda<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the club, members engage in dynamic conversations about the readings every week. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They read from various authors, including <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">E. E. Cummings, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Susan Glaspell, Ernest Hemingway, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ursula K. Le Guin, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alice Walker, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Federico Garc\u00eda Lorca, and many others.<\/span><\/p><blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is very fulfilling for me to see when students are passionate about a specific text, author, or book. My favorite part is when I let them speak and we listen to their readings and interpretations,\u201d explained Professor <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">G\u00e1mez, who has led the club for the last two academic years.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students are also invited to several club excursions throughout the semester. In the past, CIS University Book Club has visited Miguel de Cervantes\u2019 house and a medieval market in Alcal\u00e1 de Henares, the historical Chocolater\u00eda San Gin\u00e9s, theater performances such as an adaptation of Lorca\u2019s famous <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yerma<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the Retiro Park, where the weather is especially nice for reading.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This semester, the Book Club has met every Thursday at 5 p.m. In the last few weeks, they have been reading American author <\/span><b>Susan Glaspell\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">play \u2018<\/span><b><i>Suppressed Desires\u2019<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and plan to watch a Spanish adaptation of the play at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teatroespanol.es\/en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teatro Espa\u00f1ol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These shared experiences allow for a new appreciation of literature in a different way than what can be found through independent reading.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This club is not only for avid readers but also for anyone with a curiosity for literature or an interest in group dialogue. CIS University <\/span><b>Introduction to Literature professor Andrew Bennet<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> describes the importance of literature for students, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">saying that \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">everyone should have the opportunity to have an intellectual life. That means reading challenging stuff and being willing to be absorbed by it. This develops your critical sensibility, to be rigorous, fair, and balanced. All of these skills are essential not just for the workplace but to be a better person.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professor G\u00e1mez adds that reading not only improves your vocabulary and writing skills, but <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201creading about other people&#8217;s lives or characters&#8217; lives -if we talk about fiction- makes you a more empathetic and open-minded person. And that is a very important characteristic to have in a globalized and interconnected world like ours.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is not always easy for members of any club to dedicate time outside of class to this continued learning, but their efforts reap rewards far beyond the surface level. By being active participants in their learning, these students are getting the most out of their university experience.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Long-term member of the Book Club, Lorena Martin, shares her hopes for the club\u2019s future, saying <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI hope the book club will continue growing in size in the upcoming semester. It is a brilliant club to be part of. Professor Mar is lovely and always makes an effort to engage us in learning, growing, and discovering authors that we would have taken longer to find out if we were outside the club.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Lorena describes, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBooks are a powerful tool for knowing your most authentic self more closely.\u201d Through experiencing these stories together in the Book Club, it is hoped that students may come to know themselves and the people around them more authentically. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Book Club is a great way to meet students from outside one\u2019s year and major and to form new friendships as life turns over the pages.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Laura Pe\u00f1aloza\u00a0 As an international university, CIS University is made up of students with a variety of life stories.
