This fall semester the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cis-spain.com\/en\/academics\/student-support\/cis-clubs\/\"><b>Book Club<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> returned with a new program full of interesting readings, authors and activities for its members.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One evening per week student literature lovers meet with the professor of <\/span><b>Introduction to Literature <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/mar%C3%ADa-del-mar-g%C3%A1mez-garc%C3%ADa-06737032\/\"><b>Mar G\u00e1mez Garc\u00eda<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to discuss and analyze renowned texts and authors of American and Spanish literature. Sometimes they meet on the second floor of the CIS University building, other times they go to a park or on a field trip to learn about certain authors and their most famous works in an original and unforgettable way.<\/span><\/p><blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe purpose of the Book Club is for students to learn about different authors. We are going to read American, Spanish, and Latin American authors in translation, offering a variety of texts for the club members,\u201d said Dr. G\u00e1mez Garc\u00eda.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Club has already gained fame inside CIS University. It includes several regular members, all of them international students, which is not inusual at this university, as one of its stronger points is that it has a big variety of students from all over the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Book Club is not just a space to speak about novels, short stories, plays or poems, but also a place to get along with other people while spending a fun time learning and talking about different texts and topics. <\/span><\/p><blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAll of my friends are at the Book Club, we talk about books and sometimes we also speak about our issues,\u201d said <\/span><b>Sofia Sharova,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> one of the members of the club.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This semester, students have learned about American poet <\/span><b>Amanda Gorman<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and analyzed her poem \u201cThe Hill We Climb,\u201d which she read during Joe Biden\u2019s Presidential inauguration ceremony in 2021. They also read short stories like \u201cThe Enormous Radio,\u201d by <\/span><b>John Cheever<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and \u201cEveryday Use,\u201d by <\/span><b>Alice Walker,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> author of the novel <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Color Purple <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1982).<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The club members also read <\/span><b>Lope de Vega\u2019s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sonnet in Spanish and English translations in a park close to the university. After that, they visited <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.casamuseolopedevega.org\/en\/\"><b>Lope de Vega\u2019s house and museum,<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which is in downtown Madrid in \u201cEl Barrio de las Letras.\u201d This lets the members of the club learn how one of the greatest of Spain\u2019s poets and playwrights lived.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another of the highlights of this semester was watching one of Lope de Vega\u2019s play <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La discreta enamorada<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Love but Discreet<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) in <\/span><b>Teatro de la Comedia,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the Spanish National Classic Theatre Company.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CIS University has plenty of different clubs to enable their students be able to learn and explore different topics or activities. <\/span><\/p><blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is just one of the other clubs I attend, as I have the opportunity to attend many clubs and activities,\u201d said <\/span><b>Katya Panferova,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a Book Club member.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Book Club gives the opportunity to those students who like to talk about books, and even to those who do not so much, but would like to start to enjoy them, explore new authors or visit places they probably would not visit by themselves. It is also an opportunity to get to know new people and make new friends.
