Among all the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cis-spain.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>university degrees<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> out there, none opens the door exclusively, and none closes it. Your degree is the first step. After that comes a demanding selection process, and it pays to understand it from day one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this article, we explain how entry requirements work, what the path to a diplomatic career looks like, and which degrees give you a strong foundation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Requirements to Become a Diplomat<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each country sets its own entry requirements for its diplomatic service, so the first step is to check the official entry requirements for your country&#8217;s diplomatic service.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To show what that looks like in practice, here are the main requirements for Spain, based on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.exteriores.gob.es\/es\/Ministerio\/EscuelaDiplomatica\/AccesoCarreraDiplomatica\/Paginas\/index.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">selection process run by Spain&#8217;s Ministry of Foreign Affairs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.boe.es\/diario_boe\/txt.php?id=BOE-A-2025-25622\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2025 call published in the Official State Gazette (BOE)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Spanish nationality.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>A university degree:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a bachelor&#8217;s degree, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">licenciatura<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, engineering or architecture degree, or being in a position to obtain one by the end of the application period. No specific field is required.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Recognition of foreign degrees.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Applicants with a degree earned abroad must hold the official credential of homologation or a certificate of equivalence.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>General public service requirements,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as having the functional capacity for the job and not being disqualified from public office.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Details can change from one call to the next, so always review the rules of the most recent one. If your country has different rules, or you aren&#8217;t a Spanish national, there are other international career paths, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cis-spain.com\/en\/blog\/what-to-study-to-work-for-the-european-union-degrees-roles-and-career-paths\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">working for the European Union<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>How to Build a Diplomatic Career<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A diplomatic career isn&#8217;t a degree. It&#8217;s a professional path.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The exact format varies by country. In Spain, the path has three steps:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b> Earn a valid university degree.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It&#8217;s the foundation for everything that follows, and the field you choose will shape how you approach the next step.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b> Pass the competitive exams.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> There are four elimination-stage exams, based on a broad syllabus that runs from international law and the European Union to economics, history, and international relations:<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A multiple-choice test on the syllabus (100 graded questions).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A language exercise, written and oral. English and French are mandatory, with a minimum of 5 points out of 10 in each.
