Catalog Description

The course continues to develop the skills introduced in Elements of Writing I. Students develop a portfolio of their work. In addition, some of the writing assignments are in response to readings, and the final paper involves the use of outside sources.

 

Learning outcomes

At the completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • Apply writing-process principles to various assignments (assessed through writing assignments and portfolio).
  • Identify main ideas in brief readings (assessed through workbook exercises).
  • Increase confidence in their ability to read, comprehend, organize, and retain written information (assessed through workbook exercises).
  • Increase vocabulary through the study of word parts, use of context clues, and practice with a dictionary (assessed through workbook exercises).
  • Develop an ability to recognize main idea and supporting details in order to improve comprehension and retention of written information (assessed through in-class writing and workbook exercises).
  • Improve reading fluency (assessed through workbook exercises)
  • Provide concrete support within paragraphs (assessed through writing assignments and portfolio).
  • Write essays in a confident voice (assessed through writing assignments and portfolio).
  • Analyze and evaluate their own and others’ writing (assessed through portfolio).
  • Research a topic using valid resources (assessed through research paper).
  • Write a research paper (1,000 words) incorporating research elements with properly integrated information and MLA documentation (assessed through research paper).
